We deliver Crested Butte’s best custom-guided mountain biking, hiking, and skiing adventures.

Backcountry Skiing
Our guides would love to take you skiing in the backcountry around Crested Butte, or the huts between here and Aspen.

We’ll work with your crew to create a personalized experience of a lifetime. Your guide will choose a route based on current conditions, as well as your group’s fitness, goal, and logistics.

If you’re an experienced backcountry skier looking to make the most of limited time, we’ve got you covered. If the backcountry is new for you, we’d love to help you develop the skills needed for a safe and enjoyable winter adventure.

Avalanche Courses
Come to Crested Butte to learn with Colorado Backcountry for the best AIARE avalanche education in Colorado. Our highly experienced and professional team includes AMGA certified guides, avalanche forecasters, ski patrol snow safety staff, as well AIARE Instructor Trainers, and AIARE Pro Trainers. All our staff meet or exceed AIARE and American Avalanche Association instructor qualifications.

Mountain Bike Guiding and Courses
Our home turf of Crested Butte has a lot of trails, like over 800 miles of singletrack. When you add in all the other places we guide around western Colorado and eastern Utah, the mileage is downright overwhelming.

If you want to make the most of your precious ride time, come ride with us. Our guides will put together the perfect trail link. You want quiet remote singletrack, we’ve got that. You want quick convenient shred-fest with view – sure, no problem. You want an all-day epic with huge views and amazing trail quality – of course. You want to sample the enduro tracks used by the Enduro World Series – follow us!

Guided Hikes and Peak Bagging
If you love to hike, there’s no better place than the backcountry around Crested Butte. We believe in experiencing nature in small, private groups. No mass-produced hiking tours here. Just you, your friends, and nature in all her glory.

Fields of waist-high wildflowers, deserted mountain summits, quiet alpine lakes, efficient networks of game trails through dramatic alpine basins…we have it all. From short scenic rambles to multi-day epic adventures we’ve got you covered. All of our hikes can be customized to your group’s experience and fitness level.

  1. We had an AMAZING experience with Colorado Backcountry Guides! Our guide, Dave Bumgarner was outstanding. Very knowledge, very personable (which helps as you climb a mountain for 5 hours), and very cognizant of pushing us, but not over exceeding our abilities as novice backcountry skiers. If you are in Crested Butte and looking for a challenge and a way to skip lift lines I’d highly recommend this company and Dave as your guide!

  2. Best tour guide in Colorado! Ben drove us all around CB and we saw the most beautiful places. Just check out the photos – from waterfalls to gorges – this is the tour to take. Thank you Ben!!!

  3. Ben was an excellent guide who knows the best trails to ride. He was super to hang out with for a day of riding.

  4. wanted to do some of the famous rides but didn’t feel confident giving it a whirl with my present skill level. So I found Colorado Backcountry while surfing around and figured I’d hire a guide or maybe take one of their skills clinics. I chose the latter, figuring it’d be more useful in the long-term and I’m so glad I did. Andy Shabo was my coach and he was super personable and has a long history as a professional rider. We worked on what you typically think of when someone discussed “mountain bike skills” (cornering, braking, body position and more) but the focus on using your eyes was a skill I didn’t know I didn’t have, and that will probably make the biggest difference. I know most folks who come to CB with a bike on the rack already have skills (or think they have them) but, if you’re getting into the sport, I think investing in at least one lesson is a wise investment in your fun, health and safety. Thanks, y’all!

  5. Simply the best guide I have ever met. Been guided us for three days mountain biking. His trail choice was perfect. He couldn’t have been more accommodating. And his knowledge of the mountains was incredible. When I’m next in town I’ll be calling Ben
