The 50th Al Johnson Uphill Downhill Memorial Telemark Ski Race 2024

The Al Johnson Memorial Telemark Race returns for it’s 50th year!

In the late 1880s, Al Johnson strapped 11-foot-long skis to his leather boots and climbed over mountain passes from Crystal, Colo. to Crested Butte to deliver the mail.

Ninety years later, in 1974 to be exact, amid a telemark renaissance, the Crested Butte freeheel community started the Al Johnson Memorial Uphill/Downhill Telemark Ski Race to honor Johnson’s effort. It’s part athleticism, part anarchy and all circus sideshow.

Racers will climb 660 vertical feet, followed by a 1,200-foot descent through Crested Butte’s infamous Extreme Terrain, all while sporting their best costumes and Telemark gear.

There will be sweat, screams, hoots, hollers, prizes, glory, and costumes you’ll never forget.

Come to the race or come to watch, just make sure you’re there on March 17!

All proceeds benefit the Crested Butte Avalanche Center.

Check-in and registration is from 8am-10am and the race kicks off at noon.

The after party sponsored by Anheuser-Busch is from 3pm-5pm in Butte 66, with awards presented at 4pm. Awards given for fastest times and best costumes!
